ONE REFLECTION

"What a great word: PATH! My experience with God takes place along the path, both in the search, and allowing myself to be sought..."  Pope Francis

And what of our 2013 path and the 2014 path that opens before us.

The 2013 path has come to a juncture. We have left our marks on this path. And we shall not pass this way again. We have also mourned the loss of dear ones departed. They are now out ahead of us beyond the next horizon.

A new path beckons and invites us forward. Now is the time to gently let go of any back pack filled with guilt, or regrets. Let it go. Let it go. Let it be.

"The first religious experience is walking." Pope Francis It is what the Holy Family did all the way to Egypt. It is what many migrant families do today, seeking better lives for their children in what they perceive to be better and safer places. The Holy Family was a migrant family. I have driven across the Sinai desert. It is unforgiving. I have also visited the Church of The Flight into Egypt in Cairo. What an epic flight just to protect the Christ Child! PRAYER FOR FAMILIES O GOD, HELP FAMILIES IN OUR DAY TAKE FLIGHT FROM: ...violence on our streets, The corrosive effects of excesses of video violence, Porn spewed out of computers, Gluttony and greed, Parental neglect, Infidelity, Addiction. HOLY FAMILY, GUIDE US THROUGH THE WASTELANDS ON THE PATH TO THE PROMISED LAND. AMEN

alt"People who walked in darkness have seen a great light; Upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom, A light has shown." IS 9:1. First Christmas Reading

Of the 26 letters of the alphabet, which three letters are not only letters, but are also words?

A..............I............O

AND THE LETTER "O" consider it as a special Christmas letter.

One of the two most beautiful Christmas songs begins: "O Come All Ye Faithful!"

But more than that, this word "O" can have so many different meanings, depending on how we say it: We might say, "O???"  And thus a question. Or we might say, O!!! And mean surprise. Or we might say, "OOO!" and this might mean sadness.

But the most beautiful "O" we might say is the "Christmas O." Because it was the exclamation of Joseph and of Mary when they glimpsed the Christ Child. It is the "O!" of wonder and awe.

And when we say this kind of "O" we are praying!

In his book, "Jesus Christ Before Christianity" by Alfred Nolan, he writes that too often fatalism is a prevailing adult attitude.

Too often, we think nothing can be done...or, "You can't change the world." Or "It has always been this way!" Or, "There is nothing new under the sun!"

But Christmas rebukes that! There IS SOMETHING....SOMEONE NEW UNDER THE SUN!

The Christ Child!

"O come all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant...

And exclaim before the crib: "OOO,!!"

And on this Christmas, look anew in the eyes of loved ones and say anew""OOO!!! Praise God for such wondrous gifts!"

"REJOICE IN THE LORD ALWAYS; AGAIN I SAY, REJOICE. INDEED THE LORD IS NEAR."

3rd Sunday, Introit, Phil. 4-5

Liturgical Color: Rose

"The Lord is near!" That is our challenge, to BELIEVE that the Lord is near to what we hear on the 10 o'clock news. Near? Really?
