Thirty First Sunday In Ordinary Time, Nov. 3, 2013
Zacchaeus! Come down, I must stay at your house today!"
Have you ever been, Too fat? Too skinny? Too short? Too much of anything? Then rejoice because the Lord wants to stay at your house today!
Zacchaeus went "out on a limb" to see The Lord passing by. It was his only recourse since all the "IN" people lined the road and there was no room for him to see. He was the clever Danny Devito of his day.
He was also a sinner, but one who still cared for the poor!
And that was enough for Jesus to give him a place of honor.

Not so long ago, a hard nosed business man climbed to the pinnacle of business glory by becoming president of a major railroad company. He had all the perks of power and was catered to in all kinds of ways. Over his long career he interacted with countless numbers of people. Then he retired and eventually died. After his death, his chauffer said, “Only nine people attended his funeral.”

I write this in the Omaha air port terminal after three days here conducting the Wake for a life long friend Joanie Hautzinger, attending a second wake for another, and anointing two cousins and a friend. Joanie a woman of prayer. Today in the Gospel, Jesus encourages us to persist. Prayer is an energy and the more we engage in it the stronger will be our spirits. As St. Paul admonishes us...do not grow tired in doing good!
