CHRISTMAS, 2018

Where is God?

Where is God to be found?

Is God out there beyond the Hubble Telescope's far seeing eye?

Is God beyond the countless galaxies?

Is God beyond the beyond?

Theologians cal these kinds of questions:

Questions about transcendance.

In the sixties when I taught religion at Marian High School, and we discussed these questions, a sophomore girl named Shari Stratman shook her head and proclaimed:

"God is just too much!"

Right Shari. Right.

So I spend a lot of time talking about this God,

but where exactly is the mysterious elusive God to be found?

Surprise!

Christmas reveals the presence of God where we would least expect to find God:

in a manger.

in the straw,

with animals' breath to warm him,

a mother's arms to cradle him.

a father's love to protect him.

Has God been playing "Hide and Seek" with us?

If God has been hiding,

we have found him!

And so we pray:

O Come all ye faithful,

joyful and triumphant,

Come to Bethlehem and see:

the "hidden  God"

has been found,

and surprise:

God is close!

altAmen
