The Road to Emmaus
Luke 24-13-35
Is the wondrous tale of the two disciples high tailing out of town to escape the degredation of the cross when they encounter the Risen Jesus on the road.
In a real sense, it is your story, my story and the story of all refugees.
We all want to flee from the horrible, and the cross was horrible.
So the two disciples,a couple perhaps? are in flight.
As they flee, they mull over the terrible events of the last hours.
They try to find meaning in these tragic events.
They HAD hoped in Jesus, but now their hopes have been dashed.
The stranger besides them chides them with a smile, as he asks them what events they are escaping?
They respond, "Are you the only one who does not know what happened in Jerusalem?"
Jesus has to smile at their bewilderment.
Then he explains the Scriptures to them how these events had to happen.
So too for us, the Scriptures have to give us meaning, and Easter hope.
And at the end of this splendid story, we are told by Luke: "They came to know him in the breaking of the bread."
Observe today, the moment when the priest breaks off a fraget of the bread and drops it into the chalice, and come to know Jesus in this breaking of the bread.
And so we pray:
Jesus, walk with us.
Lift up or hearts.
Exalt our spirits,
for you are the Risen Lord.
And you walk with us.
We are never alone,
nor abandoned.
Praise God, Alleluia!
For you are with us still
on our every road.
Amen
