What are you looking for?

"What are you looking for?" asks Jesus.

Shakesphere says the primal question is "to be or not to be?"

The equally primary question joined to that is "What are you looking for?"

This fundamental question echoes down the ages from the lips of Jesus.

We need look no farther than the crib to find the initial answer.

The infant is looking for primal love.

Without that primary love and acceptance the baby shrivels and dies.

In today's Gospel, Jesus asks the disciples:"What are you looking for?"

And then he says: "Come and see."

This is after John proclaims:"Behold the Lamb of God?"

As we ponder these basic questions, another arises:

"Lamb of what God?"

Is our God a far distant cold and indifferent deity,

or a God who cares deeply and wants to fulfill our deepest need for love?

Augustine answers the latter: "Our hearts are made for God and are restless till they rest in God!"

Saint Paul in today's 2nd Reading asks another primal question:

"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you whom you have from God?"

So the fire of God's love flames up within us unless we extinguish it with cold indiffeence.

And so we pray;

Come Holy Spirit,

fill the hearts of your faithful.

Enkindle within us the fire of your love.

Send forth your Spirit,

and we shall be recreated and you shall renew the face of the earth.

Amen.
